Semi-Automatic 3D Reconstruction of Atheroma Plaques from Intravascular Ultrasound Images Using an ad-hoc Algorithm

The occurrence of atheroma plaques in the arteries can eventually obstruct them, leading to diseases such as atherosclerosis, which cause, among others, a myocardial infarction or stroke. As consequence, it is necessary shorten time spent locating and reconstructing plaque that be developed an artery. This localization usually conducted manually from contours located on cross-sectional radiographs artery then reconstructed by creating volumes using different techniques. paper presents 3-D reconstruction applying image processing algorithm ad-hoc order obtain boundaries atheroma, set intravascular ultrasound images. advantage approach this implemented common medical procedures, important complementary decision-support tool. By instead artery, work provides improve its location treatment. Results presented herein machine-learning-based algorithms, able predict growth extent incipient plaques, ultimately contribute early detection pathology.
